Sept 5, 2008: "Why isn't EFT working for my pain?"

Greetings!
A question that continues to present itself is: "Why isn't EFT working on my pain?" While there could be many reasons, I usually learn that only the pain or other discomfort is being addressed - with no consideration for the attached or potentially related emotion. While sometimes it is possible achieve results without addressing the emotions, many times it doesn't work that way. So here are a few examples and clues to consider, along with possible tapping scenarios.
1. "But I can't connect it with anything." Believe it or not, it usually doesn't matter. How do you feel about the headache, backache or other discomfort? Does it make you angry, sad, frustrated - because it is interfering with your day? Put the two together - maybe using something like this:
At the Karate Chop (repeat 2 or 3 times):
Even though I have this frustrating shoulder ache, that won't let me do what I need to do, I love and accept myself unconditionally...
Through The Sequence:
This frustrating shoulder pain
And all the underlying causes
This distracting shoulder ache
That's throwing me off course
This frustrating shoulder ache
I don't know what it is all about
But I am ready to let it go!
I am ready to feel great!
As you tap your way through it, see if something or someone doesn't come to mind. And please don't ignore it, as many people do because initially they can't quite figure out the connection. Trust it - and know that if it weren't a contributing factor, it never would have come to mind. Follow the trail!
2. "I see a connection, but how do I tie it together?" Consider something like this, remembering the most important thing is that it resonates with you. Always trust what you are feeling.
At the Karate Chop:
Even though I have all this anger in my shoulder, I am ready to let this go.
Even though a part of me may not be ready to let go of this anger in my shoulder, who wouldn't be angry? I am ready for peace within.
Through The Sequence:
This anger in my shoulder
I am absolutely furious and it feels good to say it out loud!
All this anger in my shoulder
I have every right to be angry
This anger in my shoulder
Maybe I have held onto it long enough
This anger in my shoulder
I know it holding me hostage
Maybe it is time for peace
3. "I am someone who can't connect with my emotions and I am not making progress. Now what?"
At the Karate Chop:
Even though I can't define or connect with the emotions in my shoulder, I am ready for freedom.
OR
Even though I can't identify or feel the emotions generating discomfort in my shoulder, love and accept myself anyway.
OR
Even though a part of me is afraid to connect with the emotions in my shoulder, I love and accept every part of me anyway.
Through The Sequence:
These emotions and discomfort in my shoulder
I don't want to feel these emotions
I can't feel these emotions
And I don't have to
Even though I can't define or feel them,
I am acknowledging them and letting them go
All this discomfort and emotion in my shoulder
I am embracing peace within
Please adjust the language to suit your particular situation. These are only suggested approaches to help you get started. Always remember what resonates for you personally is the most important consideration. Trust and believe in you, and may you find this beneficial.

Tuning your Emotional Engine: by Jade Barbee
Our "Emotional Engines" are always trying to tell us something. Whether you're dealing with a small bodily sensation or a larger, more chronic physical or emotional issue, your body will appreciate the attention you can give to any feelings you may be holding on to.
By giving yourself a daily 'tuneup', with a little help from your imagination, you can address little "sounds" your body is making and/or begin to address larger issues. Even if you are recovering from serious illness or a physical accident, working with emotions will help get you out of the way so that you can create the space for your body's natural healing processes to spring into action...
Where are you at right now?
As you close your eyes and scan for sensations in your body, notice how each part of you feels. Where are you holding tension right now? What does that tension or feeling remind you of? If there were an emotional element to that tension, what might it be? What words, images or sounds come to mind?
Visualize a helping hand...
Once you've isolated a troubling feeling or sensation in your body, give it a name. Where do you feel it in your body? How intense (on a scale of 1-10) is the feeling?
Now imagine that a friend, counselor or your favorite EFTer is standing in front of you, looking at you with an attentive, warm gaze. Imagine that this person is going to lead your through your session, starting with their Karate Chop (or Sore Spot). If you can only imagine their voice, that's ok too - just go with it!
Imagine they are speaking these phrases as you tap along and repeat the words below:
Even though I have this _________ feeling, in my _________ , I deeply love and accept every part of me
Even though a part of me feels ____________, in my _________ , I deeply love and and honor that part of me, and I'm ready to let this feeling flow - and let it go!
Even though a part of feels ______________, in my ___________ , I am open to possibility of deeply accepting every part of me...
Now, imagine that your "practitioner" is leading you through The Sequence, starting with the Top of the Head:
This _______ feeling in my _________, I'm open to accepting it, and allowing it to release
This ________ feeling, I feel it in my __________
This persistent ________ feeling, it feels like ________, I want to let it go
This ___________ feeling, thanking it for talking to me, I'm ready to feel good
This feeling of ____________, in my ____________
This remaining feeling of _________, in my __________, knowing it's safe to let it go, to trust and believe in me!
This remaining feeling of __________, working so hard to talk to me, I choose to trust it's safe to let it go! I'm ready to transform this feeling into confidence and peace within!
Whatever your challenge, you can call your new 'imaginary' buddy to assist and help lead you through the tapping process!
